These few preludes are my first forays in into the dangerous (for any non-pianist composer) world of solo piano writing. It's been something, and there are other things, I've been avoiding for years. But Aaron Wunsch and I worked together on a project with the New Juilliard Ensemble, and I found that I could understand his playing--his music-making--in a way that got me to think about seriously delving into something for him. The first piece is, for me, contemplative, the second, cheeky, and the third is something new, as yet without adjective association. To my surprise, I found the piano, for all of its idiosyncrasies, to be a terrific playground for what I was working through at the time, and I'm looking forward to expanding the set.
